SKI TIPS:

#8 Short Turns are a must for every skier’s repertoire. It is essential to be able to ski multiple turns of a very tight radius without picking up speed or changing line. This skill is the key to making consistent arcs in powder, skiing chutes and couloirs, negotiating moguls, skiing the fall line on a crowded day to avoid an unplanned “meeting” with other skiers and boarders, and to just having fun warming up on a cold day or the first run. Both legs need to turn simultaneously and strongly underneath a mostly stable upper body. You need to maintain tension in the core area to keep the body “aimed” down the hill. Pole swing with a light touch is also essential. Practice short turns at first without trying to carve. Turn the skis aggressively left and right so the tips alternately point toward the side of the trail. Pick a “target” down the hill and keep the upper body aimed there. Make sure your pole swing is linear and directed toward your target. Little by little, add some edging and refine each turn into a carve. For coaching on short turns, come to the Belleayre Ski School and take a lesson!
